BILL reviewAP, AR and free spend management with corporate cards for US businesses

4.3

Brent score, out of 5

BILL is one of the most complete finance automation suites for US small and mid-sized businesses. Spend & Expense with the BILL Divvy Card costs nothing in software fees, while AP and AR start at $49 per user per month plus per-payment fees. It earns its price when bills and approvals pile up, but the per-user cost and transaction fees add up for larger teams.

Best for

  • US small businesses paying dozens of vendor bills a month
  • Finance teams that need approval workflows and an audit trail
  • Companies wanting free corporate cards with budgets and spend controls
  • Accounting firms managing AP for several clients

Skip it if

  • Businesses outside the US, since cards and payments are US-focused
  • Very small businesses paying a handful of bills a month
  • Teams that want AP and AR without per-transaction fees

Paying bills by hand is slow and risky. Invoices arrive in different inboxes, someone has to chase approvals, checks go missing, and then the same data gets typed into the accounting system again. Meanwhile employees put company spending on personal cards and wait weeks to be repaid.

BILL tackles both sides. Its AP and AR plans automate bill capture, approvals and payments, with sync to QuickBooks, Xero and larger ERPs. Its Spend & Expense product, with the BILL Divvy Card, gives your team corporate cards with budgets and receipt capture for no software fee.

Below is what each part costs, which fees to expect, and when BILL is worth it.

What is BILL?

BILL is a US financial operations platform. AP (accounts payable) lets you capture bills, code them with AI, route them for approval and pay vendors by ACH, check, card or international wire. AR (accounts receivable) sends invoices and collects payments. Spend & Expense issues physical and virtual BILL Divvy Cards, sets budgets and limits, captures receipts with AI and handles reimbursements. Cards may be issued by bank partners of Divvy Pay, LLC, and credit lines depend on approval.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Spend & Expense has no subscription or per-user software fee
  • Credit lines from $1,000 to $5M, subject to approval
  • Unlimited physical and virtual cards with budgets and controls
  • Team plan adds 2-way sync with QuickBooks Online and Xero plus AI bill coding
  • Virtual card payments and international FX payments carry no BILL fee
  • Live chat and phone support on all plans

What could be better

  • AP/AR is priced per user, from $49 to $89/user/month before Enterprise
  • Per-payment fees apply, such as $0.59 per ACH and $1.99 per mailed check
  • Essentials has only CSV import and export, not automatic accounting sync
  • Custom approval policies need Corporate at $89/user/month
