Descript reviewEdit video and podcasts by editing the transcript, with AI cleanup built in
Excellent
Brent score, out of 5
Descript makes editing talking-head video and podcasts feel like editing a document: delete a word in the transcript and it disappears from the media. Its AI tools (Studio Sound, filler-word removal, clips, Underlord) save real hours. Watch the monthly media-hour and AI-credit caps, which shape which plan you actually need.

Best for
- Podcasters who want fast cleanup and transcripts
- YouTubers and course creators editing talking-head video
- Marketers cutting short clips from long recordings
- Small teams who review and comment on edits together
Skip it if
- Editors who need frame-precise, effects-heavy timelines like Premiere or DaVinci Resolve
- People editing many hours of footage a month on a budget
- Anyone who needs watermark-free export for free
Editing a 40-minute interview on a normal timeline means scrubbing back and forth to find every 'um', every false start and every awkward pause. It is slow work, and it is the reason many podcasts and videos never get published.
Descript changes the method. It transcribes your recording, then lets you edit the media by editing the text. Delete a sentence and the video cuts itself. Add AI cleanup and a muddy home recording can sound close to studio quality.
Below we cover what each plan includes, where the limits bite, and when a traditional editor is still the better choice.
What is Descript?
Descript is a desktop and web app for recording, editing and publishing video and audio. It transcribes everything you import, and the transcript becomes the editing surface: cut, rearrange or delete text and the media follows. On top of that sit AI tools such as Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Create Clips, AI speech with voice clones, captions and the Underlord AI co-editor. Plans are priced per person, with monthly limits on media hours and AI credits.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Transcript-based editing removes most of the timeline learning curve
- Studio Sound and filler-word removal clean up rough recordings in a click
- Transcription in 25 languages with speaker detection on all paid plans
- Built-in Rooms recording and screen recording, so you can record and edit in one place
- Live collaboration and comments for team review
- Creator plan exports in 4K and includes 1 TB of cloud storage
What could be better
- Monthly media hours are capped (10 on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator), and they count uploads whether or not you transcribe them
- AI credits are limited (400 a month on Hobbyist), so heavy Underlord or AI speech use needs a bigger plan
- Free plan exports only at 720p with a watermark
- Monthly billing costs up to 35% more than annual

Key features of Descript
Text-based editing
Every recording is transcribed and the transcript drives the edit. Removing a word, sentence or section in the text removes it from the audio and video, which makes rough cuts much faster.
Studio Sound and filler-word removal
Studio Sound reduces room echo and background noise, and Remove Filler Words strips out 'um' and 'uh' across a whole file. Both are included from the Hobbyist plan.
Underlord AI co-editor
Underlord can handle tasks like creating clips, writing titles and suggesting edits. Access starts on Hobbyist, and each plan's AI credits limit how much you can use it.
Create Clips and captions
Pull short social clips from long recordings and add dynamic captions, transitions and animation. This suits teams repurposing podcasts into Shorts and Reels.
Rooms and screen recording
Record remote interviews or your screen inside Descript, so the footage lands straight in your project. Recording hours per drive scale from 5 a month on Hobbyist to 25 on Business.
Collaboration and brand control
Live collaboration and comments come with every paid plan. Business adds Brand Studio, translation with proofreading and a transcription glossary for teams.

Weekly interview podcast
A host records a guest in Rooms, runs Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words, then trims tangents in the transcript. A one-hour episode a week fits inside Hobbyist's 10 media hours.
YouTube talking-head videos
A creator records to camera, cuts mistakes by deleting text, adds captions and exports in 4K on Creator. Rough cuts that took an afternoon on a timeline take far less time.
Social clips from webinars
A marketing team uploads a webinar, uses Create Clips to pull five short highlights, and adds branded captions. Comments let a manager approve each clip before posting.

Descript: frequently asked questions
Is Descript free?+
Yes, there is a free plan with 1 media hour a month, 100 one-time AI credits and 5 GB of storage. Exports are 720p and carry a watermark.
What counts as a media hour in Descript?+
Descript counts the media you upload or record each month, whether or not you transcribe it. Hobbyist includes 10 hours, Creator 30 and Business 40.
Is Descript good for YouTube?+
It suits talking-head, tutorial and podcast-style YouTube videos very well because editing is text-based. For heavy effects or color grading, a traditional editor is still stronger.
Does Descript remove filler words automatically?+
Yes. Remove Filler Words is included from the Hobbyist plan and can strip words like 'um' and 'uh' across a whole recording. The free plan only has limited access to AI features.
How many languages does Descript transcribe?+
Paid plans include transcription in 25 languages, with multitrack transcription and detection of 8+ speakers.
Is Descript cheaper billed annually?+
Yes. Descript says annual billing saves up to 35% over monthly. For example, Hobbyist is $16/month billed annually versus $24 month to month.
Final verdict
Is Descript worth it?
If editing is the bottleneck between you and publishing, Descript is worth an hour of your time. Start free, edit one real recording by deleting text, and upgrade to Hobbyist or Creator once you want clean, watermark-free exports.
