DigitalOcean reviewSimple cloud servers, databases and Kubernetes with clear monthly prices
Excellent
Brent score, out of 5
DigitalOcean is the cloud for developers and small teams who want servers, databases and Kubernetes without the maze of AWS. Prices are low and predictable, starting at $4/month for a Droplet, and billing is per second. You manage your own servers on Droplets, so non-technical site owners are better served by a managed host.

Best for
- Developers and startups deploying apps and APIs
- Technical users who want a low-cost VPS
- Small teams running Kubernetes without enterprise complexity
- AI builders who need on-demand GPUs
Skip it if
- Non-technical site owners who don't want to manage a server
- Enterprises needing the full catalogue of AWS or Azure services
- People who want hosting with email included
You've built an app, a bot or a website, and now it needs to live somewhere. AWS has hundreds of services and a bill you can't predict. Cheap shared hosting won't run your Node app or Docker containers. You just want a server you control at a price you understand.
DigitalOcean offers exactly that: cloud servers called Droplets with monthly caps, plus managed databases, object storage, Kubernetes and a platform for deploying apps from GitHub. The product range is small enough to understand in an afternoon.
This review covers the real prices, what each product is for and when you should pick a managed host instead.
What is DigitalOcean?
DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider. Its core product, the Droplet, is a Linux virtual server you choose by size and region and manage yourself. Around it sit App Platform (deploy code from GitHub or GitLab without managing servers), Managed Databases, Spaces object storage, Load Balancers, Managed Kubernetes and GPU Droplets for AI workloads. Droplets are billed per second with monthly caps, and usage is invoiced at the start of each month.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Low entry price: Basic Droplets from $4/month with 500 GiB transfer
- Per-second billing with a 60-second minimum
- Free App Platform tier for up to 3 static sites
- Managed databases from $15/month and Kubernetes from $12/month
- GPU Droplets on demand from $0.76/GPU/hour
- Clear, predictable pricing compared with the largest clouds
What could be better
- Droplets are unmanaged: you handle updates, security and backups yourself
- Backups cost extra (20% of the Droplet price weekly, 30% daily)
- Smaller service range than AWS, Azure or Google Cloud
- The $4 Droplet has only 512 MiB RAM, too small for most WordPress sites

Key features of DigitalOcean
Droplets (virtual servers)
Basic Droplets start at $4/month for 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer. General Purpose Droplets with dedicated CPU start at $63/month for 2 vCPU and 8 GiB RAM.
App Platform
Deploy apps from GitHub, GitLab or a container registry with automatic HTTPS, custom domains and a global CDN. Up to 3 static sites are free, and paid tiers start at $5/month with autoscaling and rollbacks.
Managed databases
Managed databases start at $15/month. DigitalOcean runs the database service for you, which removes one of the riskiest parts of running your own server.
Kubernetes and load balancers
Managed Kubernetes clusters start at $12/month and load balancers at $12/month. It is a simpler route into containers than the large enterprise clouds.
GPU Droplets and AI inference
GPU Droplets start at $0.76/GPU/hour on demand, with lower rates for multi-month commitments. Inference is priced from $0.05 per million tokens.
Backups and snapshots
Droplet backups cost 20% of the Droplet price for weekly or 30% for daily, or use usage-based backups from $0.01/GiB per month. Snapshots cost $0.06/GB per month.

Self-hosting n8n or a small app
A developer runs n8n, a Node API or a Docker stack on a Basic Droplet for a few dollars a month, with full root access and a fixed monthly cap.
A startup's production stack
A small team deploys its web app on App Platform, uses a managed database for data and adds a load balancer as traffic grows, all on one invoice.
Training or running AI models
An AI builder rents a GPU Droplet by the hour for a training run or inference service and shuts it down when finished, paying only for the hours used.
