4.0

Very good

Brent score, out of 5

SentryPC packs activity monitoring, content filtering, usage schedules and geofencing into one cloud dashboard, and every plan gets every feature, so a single device costs $69.95 a year and large fleets drop below $10 a device. It suits small businesses, schools and parents who want to see and limit computer use. Logs are kept for only a month, there is no iPhone support, and all sales are final, so try the demo account first.

Best for

  • Small businesses that want to see how company computers are used
  • Parents who want time limits and website blocking on a child's PC, Mac or Chromebook
  • Schools that need to enforce acceptable-use rules across many devices
  • Buyers who want one tool for monitoring and blocking instead of two

Skip it if

  • Anyone who needs to monitor iPhones or iPads
  • Companies that must keep activity logs for months for compliance
  • Buyers who want a free trial with a refund safety net

You suspect work hours are going to social media, or your child is up at 2 a.m. on games. You do not want to hover over anyone's shoulder, but you do want to know what is happening and set some limits.

SentryPC is a cloud-based tool that does both jobs. It records activity on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Android devices, blocks apps, games and websites, sets daily time schedules, and shows everything in one online dashboard. One device costs $69.95 a year, and every plan includes every feature.

This review covers what it records, what it costs, the one-month log limit and the refund terms you should know before you buy. Use it only on devices you own or are authorized to monitor, and follow your local laws on consent.

What is SentryPC?

SentryPC is subscription monitoring and control software. You install a small agent on each Windows, Mac, Chromebook or Android device, and it reports to a cloud account you log in to from any browser. From there you view activity in near real time (applications, websites, keystrokes, screenshots, files, printing and more), set filters that block apps, games, websites and keywords, define usage schedules and maximum time limits, and receive email alerts. Geofencing adds location-based alerts. Plans are billed yearly and priced by the number of device licenses.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • All features on every plan; plans differ only by number of devices and screenshot storage
  • Low per-device cost at scale: 1,000 devices for $9,995/year, or $9.99 each
  • Monitoring, filtering, time schedules and geofencing in one cloud dashboard
  • Works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Android
  • Network-wide silent install through network shares or login scripts
  • Cancel anytime from your account; subscriptions do not renew automatically

What could be better

  • Logs older than one month are purged daily, so long-term history needs regular downloads
  • No iOS support
  • All sales are final; any refund is at SentryPC's discretion and may be prorated
  • Antivirus tools may flag the installer, and you may need to add exclusions

Key features of SentryPC

01

Activity monitoring

SentryPC records applications, websites, keystrokes, screenshots, emails, files and printing, and can show activity in real time. You can download logs as CSV files and archives as ZIP files.

02

Content filtering

Block specific applications, games, websites and keywords entirely or only during set hours. Optional email alerts tell you when a filtered item is attempted.

03

Time scheduling and limits

Set daily or weekly usage schedules and maximum usage times per user. Locked-out users can be given access by changing their settings from the dashboard.

04

Geofencing

Draw a virtual fence around a location and get alerts when a device enters or leaves. This is useful for field staff or a child's route to school.

05

Security restrictions

Lock down features such as the control panel, network settings and task manager. This stops users from simply turning the monitoring off.

06

Central cloud management

Manage many devices and users from one account, with top-usage reports, charts and activity overviews. Installation can be pushed silently across a network with shares or login scripts.
