Very good
Brent score, out of 5
Talkroute is a simple, no-contract virtual phone system that gives a small US or Canadian business a professional number, call menus, texting and video meetings without any hardware. It is easy to set up and the extra-user price is low, but key features like call recording and multiple menus sit on the US$59 Pro plan, and there are no refunds once the 7-day trial ends.

Giving out your personal mobile number to every customer works until it doesn't. Calls come in during dinner, you cannot tell a client from a friend, and when you hire someone there is no easy way to share the line or set up a menu that sends callers to the right person.
Talkroute is a virtual phone system built for exactly that stage. You get a local, toll-free or vanity business number that rings on the apps you already carry, with a menu, extensions, voicemail transcription and business texting layered on top. There is no hardware and no contract.
This review explains what each plan includes, the limits that matter (texts, menus, recording), the newer AI receptionist add-on and how Talkroute compares with other small-business phone systems.
What is Talkroute?
Talkroute is a cloud-based (VoIP) business phone service for small businesses. You choose or port a local, toll-free (800, 888, 877, 866) or vanity number, then route calls through menus, extensions, simultaneous ring and business-hours rules to team members' desktop, mobile or web apps, or forward them to any phone. Plans bundle unlimited US and Canada calling, a monthly text allowance, visual voicemail with transcription and video meetings, and optional add-ons cover bulk texting and an AI receptionist (in beta) that answers calls and website chats.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Unlimited US and Canada calling on every plan, with no contracts
- Extra users, numbers and mailboxes are only US$5/month each
- Desktop (Mac, Windows, Linux), mobile and browser apps
- Toll-free, local and vanity numbers, plus number porting
- Video meetings for up to 100 people included with every plan
- Page states no separate telecom taxes or regulatory fees
What could be better
- The US$19 Basic plan has no call menu at all
- Call recording, reporting and unlimited menus require the US$59 Pro plan
- No refunds after the 7-day trial and no proration for partial months
- Text limits are tight for SMS-heavy work: MMS counts as 3 messages and long texts split into 160-character segments

Key features of Talkroute
Call menus and extensions
Plus includes one menu with single-digit extensions; Pro adds unlimited menus, multi-digit extensions and a company directory. Each menu has 10 single-digit options, so a caller can press 1 for sales and 2 for support.
Unlimited US and Canada calling
Every Business Phone plan includes unlimited minutes across the US and Canada, under a reasonable use policy. Calls work over VoIP in the apps or forward to any traditional phone.
Business texting
Plans include 500, 2,000 or 5,000 texts a month, and bulk texting add-ons run from US$55/month for 2,500 extra messages to US$749/month for 50,000. Toll-free numbers carry no registration or campaign fees.
Visual voicemail and recording
Voicemail is transcribed and delivered by email, browser or app. Call recording, reporting, scheduled forwarding and Voice Studio (5 professional greeting clips) arrive on the Pro plan.
Video meetings
Video conferencing is included with every plan, supports up to 100 participants and meetings up to 24 hours, and guests do not need to download anything. Plus adds screen sharing and Pro adds whiteboard and file sharing.
AI Receptionist (beta)
An add-on that answers calls and website chats 24/7, books appointments and takes messages. It costs from US$39/month pay-as-you-go to US$199/month with 750 AI minutes, access is by request, and Talkroute describes it as HIPAA-compliant.

A tradesperson separating work and personal calls
A plumber takes a local business number on the Basic plan so customer calls and texts land in the Talkroute app, not his personal line. Voicemail transcripts arrive by email while he is on a job.
A three-person agency with a front menu
On Plus, callers hear 'press 1 for new projects, 2 for billing', calls ring all phones at once during business hours, and after-hours calls go to voicemail. Adding a fourth person costs US$5/month.
A small clinic that needs recorded calls
A clinic on Pro uses multiple menus, call recording and a signed BAA. It can add the AI receptionist so after-hours calls get answered and appointments are booked.
